SCIENCE REVISION GUIDE

Connect science facts and explanations

Science revision connects accurate facts to processes, diagrams, calculations and the explanations needed to apply them in unfamiliar questions.

Organise concepts as relationships

For each topic, identify key entities, processes, causes and effects rather than memorising isolated definitions. Draw a concept map or sequence from memory, then check it against the course source. Use precise terminology and include conditions, units or direction of change. A diagram is useful only when its labels and relationships can be explained.

  • Create ‘why’ and ‘what happens if’ questions
  • Link microscopic mechanisms to observable outcomes
  • Compare easily confused processes in one table

Practise scientific evidence and method

Review variables, controls, measurement, uncertainty, graph choice and conclusion limits using actual experiments. Explain why a method step is necessary and how an error affects results. When given data, describe the pattern with values before explaining it. Avoid claiming causation when the design shows only an association.

  • Label axes with quantity and unit
  • Distinguish repeatability from accuracy
  • Use anomalies as a question for investigation, not automatic deletion

Mix recall with calculation and application

Retrieve formulas and definitions, then use them in questions with new contexts. Show substitutions, units and significant figures where required. For extended answers, plan the causal chain before writing. Review lost marks by missing concept, imprecise language or application difficulty, and return to the same idea through a different question after a gap.

  • Practise interpreting tables, graphs and unfamiliar diagrams
  • Explain each calculation result in the scientific context
  • Use mark schemes to refine wording without memorising scripts

Questions, answered.

How should diagrams be used in science revision?

Draw them from memory, label only relevant structures or variables and explain the process they represent. Copying a finished diagram may improve appearance but gives little evidence that the learner can reproduce or interpret it.
